As you might know – I am a big fan of locally grown organic food. I love to shop at organic local markets. Next to shopping at these markets, there are a few other – very smart – options. Like ‘De Krat‘ (‘krat’ means vegetable crate) – a Dutch company that brings good food in a wooden vegetable crate, right to your doorstep.
‘De Krat‘ fills the crate with food that is:
- locally grown
- of high quality
- healthy & tasty
- different every week
- grown in a sustainable way
The content of the box varies every week. You can choose yourself if you want to receive De Krat every week or once in two weeks. There are some different options:
- The ‘normal krat’ contains 8 different vegetables, a portion of meat or fish, a loaf of bread and another delicious treat like eggs, cheese, jam, pesto, yogurt, etc.
- The ‘veggie krat’ contains the same ingredients but the meat or fish is replaced by a vegetarian product like tempeh, tofu or something lupine based.
- The ‘extra krat‘ contains 7 different vegetables, a loaf of bread, a double portion of meat and/or fish and a double portion of the delicious treats.
These can all be ordered every week or every two weeks, with enough ingredients for:
- 1 person normal/veggie = € 28,50, the extra = € 32,50
- 2 persons normal/veggie = € 35, the extra = € 40
- 4 persons normal/veggie = € 59, the extra = € 73
Preserve & Prepare
With every Krat you receive a document with all the ingredients listed, their origin, the best way to preserve them and a lot of different tips and recipes on how to prepare the food. From easy (all the ingredients came with ‘De Krat‘) to difficult (more time and some extra ingredients needed).
What I loved most
First of all, I really like the look of ‘De Krat‘. From the design on the website to the font, the documents and the vegetable crate itself. It all fits. The content of my Krat Extra was delicious. I received it in week 37. Lots of great ingredients. High quality, awesome taste and a lot of different uses for every ingredient (salads, juices, stews). My favorite ingredients: the bread by Menno (in my opinion the best Dutch baker ever), blackberries, the chicken, parsnip and yogurt. The yogurt was so so so creamy! Absolutely a favorite. I really love the recipes that come with De Krat. They are easy and creative and perfect if you don’t want to create a recipe yourself. That saturday, I picked one from the document and slightly changed it. I didn’t want to go out for groceries so I changed the ‘Chicken stew with white wine’ into a ‘Chicken stew with Cacacha rum, lime, brown sugar & mint’. That’s right, a Mojito chicken stew! It was awesome and delicious. I had no patience to photograph it 😉 so the recipe follows soon-ish.
What recipes did I make with the ingredients:
Next to these dishes, I added the tomatoes, cheese and salad to my quinoa salads, the apples and spinach to my juices and with the parsnip I made chips baked in coconut oil! Will post about that later too. A great alternative to unhealthy chips. The beef poulet is still waiting in my freezer – her time will come ;).
In my opinion, De Krat is one of the best food boxes on delivery out there. The ingredients are of high quality, the variety of the products is great, the delivery times are good & the recipes are delicious. So you want it now too, eh? Check out their website for delivery areas. They make a great presents too; order it here as a gift for a friend. If you want to try it before you choose to receive it weekly/2 weekly – you can order two crates with a discount of 10%. Follow De Krat on Facebook and Twitter too to stay up to date.
