A Wellness Holiday at Epic Sana in the Algarve

Epic Sana Algarve // Travel Review by Rosalie Ruardy

Epic Sana Algarve, how should I describe you? I’ve never been on a holiday that was this relaxing. It was peaceful, easy, delicious, stunning. Epic Sana took pampering to another level. Let’s start at the beginning:

Few months ago, I got the exciting news that my mom and I won a 5 day wellness holiday thanks to Garden Of Life. The travel agency Puur & Kuur organised our trip, from the (private) transfer to some extra massages. On mothers day, we flew to Portugal. Few hours of travelling later – we arrived at the stunning Epic Sana hotel in the Algarve. The weather could not have been better: it was 30 degrees and sunny. The next couple days were filled with five star buffet food, the most delicious breakfasts, tanning by the pool, massages, running on the beach, exploring the cliffs, swimming in the sea and going to bed really early. It was my first time getting pampered in a 5 star wellness resort. Loved it.

Epic Sana Algarve
Before I start babbling about how awesome the hotel is, I have to say: the hotel staff really made our holiday. I’ve read some reviews online and everyone that has been at Epic Sana Algarve seems to agree. They are super friendly, professional and just really comforting but not in an awkward way. They really know how to make you feel relaxt.

The hotel is located between Vilamoura and Albufeira. It’s right at the gorgeous Falésia Beach, which you can access through a big wooden stairway that takes you from the garden, through a pine forest, across cliffs and at the end – the beach. Epic Sana has a luxurious restaurant, an extensive spa and outdoor and indoor swimming pools. The rooms are really spacious and have a contemporary design, which I happen to love. The interior and exterior design of the hotel is elegant, modern and spacious. From the ultra clean white marble bathrooms with rain showers and bathtubs to the design lounge beds by the pool.

Healthy Food
Breakfast and all-day dining is available at the main restaurant, both indoor and outdoor. The five star buffet offers different meals every night. Some of my favourite dishes from the buffet:

  • Mini quinoa salad with apple
  • Beetroot salad with goat cheese
  • Oysters from the grill
  • Langoustines
  • Chilled mango soup
  • Poached eggs

The poolside restaurant (which serve amazing salads) provides the opportunity of relaxing with a drink or a meal while enjoying the sun. In the evening, a gourmet restaurant and 2 bars are also available.

The Spa is something else. The 1500m2 wellness centre ‘Sayanna Wellness’ is an invitation to the well-being of body and mind – and I mean it. When you enter the spa in your robe, smell the candles and hear the soft calming music, knowing that few minutes later you’ll enjoy one of the most amazing massages you’ve ever had.. Trust me, you’ll not even remember how stress feels like.

Health Nut Verdict
If you’re a health freak, Epic Sana is the place to be. Not only the food is super healthy and delicious, the beach is perfect for running and the sea is calm enough to swim long distances (I’ve seen professional swimmers train in front of the coast several times). The cliffs are perfect for hiking and if you’re done with working out outside, you can enjoy the indoor fitness centre which also offers yoga and Pilates classes. What more could you ask for? Epic Sana deserves a big 9 on the health nut scale. It’s almost perfect, but a 10 means that they offer a personal trainer too ;).

Must Do’s

  1. Treat yourself to a 90 minute Sayanna Wellness Massage. Yes, it’s expensive and no – you won’t regret it.
  2. Go running on the beach. Even when you’re not a runner, just try. The cliffs, the view, the sun. It’s all good.
  3. Order the tuna salad at the pool restaurant. It’s made with fresh tuna. Need I say more?
  4. Try the Caipirinha at the bar after dinner. It’s so tasty! But look out – don’t drink to much of it ;).
  5. Go hiking. Walk up the cliffs and see how far you can get!

A picture is worth a thousand words, right? Be warned – you might want to book a holiday at Epic Sana Algarve right away. This is what a holiday at Epic Sana Algarve looks like…

The contemporary rooms are spacious and ultra clean.

Epic Sana made me feel like a new person again. I posted just one Facebook photo during my stay, saying:

“Epic Sana Algarve is beyond awesome. The best and most chilled out holiday ever. Two days of rest here feels like two weeks! Tomorrow: sun, beach, pool, massage, spa & great food. Life’s pretty damn good.”

And my mom? She said she had never experienced such a chilled holiday before. My mom seems to be trapped in a never-ending menopause, and here at Epic Sana she felt more than fine: she hasn’t felt like this – like herself – since years. Being able to do this for my mom, to make her feel like this – is priceless.

I think that says it all 🙂

Hi Rosalie, I was very interested to read your review on Epic Sana Algarve as my husband & I are going there for our silver wedding anniversary in August 2015. My question to you is are the salads safe to eat? I’m always wary of salads abroad due to them being washed in local tap water. I eat lots of salad at home & would really miss them . Thank you in anticipation . Lorna
